REU: Fall Semester Student Research in Oceanography and Marine Science at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences

Selected students conduct independent projects under faculty and staff supervision within several research areas. Throughout the semester, REU students will give presentations that outline their research topic, methods, and results, including a final presentation to BIOS faculty, staff, and visiting students. REU students will also have the opportunity to participate in a variety of field excursions to learn about Bermuda’s natural history, flora and fauna as well as workshops and seminars given by BIOS faculty. Open to undergraduate students who have completed at least one year of undergraduate study.

Margaret A. Davidson Graduate Fellowship

The Margaret A. Davidson Graduate Fellowship is an exciting two-year fellowship program that will place one graduate student at each of the 29 national estuarine research reserves. Through a research project, fellows address a key reserve management need to help scientists and communities understand coastal challenges that may influence future policy and management strategies. The research reserves represent the apex of estuary science. At these coastal sites, fieldwork, research, and community engagement come together to create the scientific advances that change our communities and our world. Eligible applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of U.S. states or territories admitted to or enrolled in a full-time graduate program at a U.S. accredited college or university, working to obtain a master’s or doctoral degree. Applicants must plan to be enrolled for all of the first year, and the majority of the second year, of funding.

Virginia Space Grant Consortium

Commonwealth STEM Industry Internship Program (CSIIP)

In response to the increasing demand for skilled Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) workers in Virginia, the Virginia Space Grant Consortium (VSGC) has created the Commonwealth STEM Industry Internship Program (CSIIP). CSIIP links companies and students in STEM, including but not limited to high-need areas such as Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Data Science (Data Analytics, Data Visualization, etc.), Information Technology, Engineering, Physical Science and Financial majors (Finance, Economics, Accounting, Statistics). Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and attending a Virginia university, college, or community college. Virginia residents attending accredited out-of-state colleges may also apply. Actively enrolled undergraduate students should be taking at least six credit hours per semester and making demonstrated progress towards a STEM degree. Applicants must have completed at least 30 or more post-secondary education credits and are at least at rising sophomore status prior to the internship. The program is also open to recent graduates who are eligible to participate. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident in order to be eligible.

Aylesworth Scholarship

Aylesworths believed that scientific knowledge in marine-related areas coupled with decisions based on environmental and conservation factors will prove to be the only way to develop, use and manage our renewable marine resources on a long-term basis. Aylesworth Scholarships are available to students in all Florida universities that conduct research in the marine sciences. The award is for graduate and undergraduate students who are enrolled full-time at a university or college in Florida.

The goal of Marine Sea Grant Undergraduate Scholarship in Marine Science program is to develop a statewide network of undergraduate scholars doing exemplary academic work on marine and coastal issues, and provide participating students with academic and professional development opportunities in their field. The program is open to current second- and third-year undergraduate students who have declared majors related to marine or coastal issues at any of the participating undergraduate institutions in Maine.

Women in Science Scholarship

The Women in Science Scholarship supports women in the atmospheric, oceanic, and climate sciences, and related areas of study. The scholarship was established to acknowledge that gender diversity is essential in the pursuit of better science. Applicants must be entering their final year of undergraduate study in the fall, be pursuing a degree in the atmospheric or related sciences, and have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0-point scale.

National Coral Reef Management Fellowship

The fellowship provides state and territorial coral reef management agencies with highly qualified candidates whose education and work experience meet each jurisdictions specific needs, while providing the individual fellows with professional experience in coastal and coral reef resources management. Open to individuals with a master’s degree and two years of work experience OR a bachelor’s degree and four years of experience. Applicants with a doctorate or law degree are also eligible to apply.

Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship

A unique educational and professional experience to graduate students who have an interest in ocean, coastal and Great Lakes resources and in the national policy decisions affecting those resources. The Fellowship matches highly qualified graduate students with “hosts” in the legislative and executive branch of government located in the Washington, D.C. area, for a one year paid fellowship. Applicants must be enrolled in a graduate program at an accredited institution of higher education in the U.S. or U.S. territories and must have an interest in ocean, coastal and Great Lakes resources and in the national policy decisions affecting those resources.

Marine Education Fellowship

Train/work for 50 weeks to gain experience in environmental education, aquarium husbandry and coastal extension. There are three distinct tracks that focus on marine education and outreach, aquarium education and husbandry, and coastal extension. Each track includes teaching, program development and delivery, and additional but varying responsibilities. Recent college graduates with a B.S. or B.A. in coastal related discipline from an accredited college or university are eligible. Other qualifications include prior experience teaching or working with children/students, physical ability to teach outdoors in hot summers/cold winters and fluency in english.

Jose E. Serrano Educational Partnership Program with Minority Serving Institutions (EPP/MSI Undergraduate Scholarship Program)

The scholarship provides funds for two years of undergraduate study to rising junior undergraduate students attending Minority Serving Institutions majoring in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields that directly support NOAA’s mission. Participants conduct research at a NOAA facility during two paid summer internships. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or U.S. nationals currently enrolled as a full-time 2nd year student in a four-year academic program; or transferring from a two-year to a four-year institution; or a 3rd year student in a five-year program, studying a discipline related to NOAA’s programs and mission at an accredited minority serving institution (college or university within the United States or U.S. territories. Must earn and maintain a minimum 3.2 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

African American Scholar Program at the Aquarium of the Pacific

The program awards funds to support African American students who demonstrate a commitment to studies related to careers in the aquarium field, including ocean education, animal husbandry, water quality, building maintenance or facilities, microbiology, and business management. Through this program, the Aquarium hopes to bring meaningful opportunities in the marine sciences to African American students and to bring diverse minds to solving the issues facing our planet and its inhabitants. The scholarship is available to residents of California of any age with African American heritage as long as they meet the proof of acceptance or enrollment as listed above. Aquarium of the Pacific paid employees, Board members, and their immediate families are not eligible. Volunteers and their immediate families are eligible to apply.

Seas Island Alliance Project

The SEAS Islands Alliance works to broaden participation and possibilities in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education, inclusion of nuanced cultural expertise from diverse underrepresented minority (URM) and underserved populations in U.S. territories and U.S.-affiliated islands. Island regions are strongly connected to the oceans that surround them and are among the country’s most diverse communities. The Alliance works to collaborate with these communities to broaden participation of the STEM workforce. Eligibility depends on the program. They range from middle school to post-graduate. One consistent eligibility requirement is to be based on one of the islands.
