The selected REU students are matched with faculty mentors for a research experience in many areas of marine science. Interns are expected to work with their mentors to develop a project idea in the form of a brief research prospectus, conduct their research, and then present results in a final program that is open to the VIMS community. The REU intern also prepares a summary research paper that is maintained in the program archives. Open to undergraduate students attending college; rising junior and seniors are preferred.

National Coral Reef Management Fellowship
The fellowship provides state and territorial coral reef management agencies with highly qualified candidates whose education and work experience meet each jurisdictions specific needs, while providing the individual fellows with professional experience in coastal and coral reef resources management. Open to individuals with a master’s degree and two years of work experience OR a bachelor’s degree and four years of experience. Applicants with a doctorate or law degree are also eligible to apply.

The Lake Champlain Sea Grant Conservation Research Fellow will engage in applied research to develop and implement best practices for bird-friendly habitat on agricultural lands, especially in riparian areas and along shorelines. Open to a recent graduate with a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies, conservation, natural resources, or related field required; advanced degree a plus.

Mosaics in Science – National Park Service and Environment for the Americas

Mosaics in Science Internship Program
The Mosaics in Science (MIS) Diversity Internship Program provides college students and recent graduates 18-35 years old that are under-represented in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) career fields with on-the-ground, natural resource science-based, work experience in the National Park System. Each internship is comprised of working eleven weeks in a park followed by a four day career workshop held in Washington, D.C. This program is run in partnership with Environment for the Americas. Open to students who are currently enrolled in university degree program related to natural resources, preferably a racial or ethnic minority, able to dedicate 12 weeks of summer to the program.

To provide practical hands on experience with coastal Georgia shellfish though hatchery husbandry, aquaculture research, and estuarine ecology. Applicants must be undergraduate students that are enrolled in classes prior to and post internship and be able to provide enrollment documentation.

Scientist in the Parks Fellowship
Students placed in the National Park System to work on natural resource management needs. Each opportunity with the Scientist in the Parks Fellowship Program affords a distinct and memorable experience with projects that vary based on location, length, focus, and complexity. Past projects include mapping sand dunes at Fire Island National Seashore, surveying towering cacti at Saguaro National Park, and protecting nesting sea turtles at Padre Island National Seashore. Applicant must be enrolled as an upper level undergrad (junior/ senior) and will not graduate before finishing position, or an undergrad that has already earned undergrad degree and has applied to attend grad school. Limited to 30 years or younger; 35 or younger if veteran.
