The Northern Gulf of Alaska (NGA) Long Term Ecological Research REU programs is open to undergraduate students who are interested in interdisciplinary oceanographic research. The research team investigates the features, mechanisms, and processes that support NGA ecosystem production and foster its resilience. Scientists conduct field work, including ship-based experiments, run computer models of the ocean, and communicate findings to students and the public through education and outreach partners. Open to undergraduate students at 2-4 year institution with interest in STEM.

REU: Fall Semester Student Research in Oceanography and Marine Science at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences
Selected students conduct independent projects under faculty and staff supervision within several research areas. Throughout the semester, REU students will give presentations that outline their research topic, methods, and results, including a final presentation to BIOS faculty, staff, and visiting students. REU students will also have the opportunity to participate in a variety of field excursions to learn about Bermuda’s natural history, flora and fauna as well as workshops and seminars given by BIOS faculty. Open to undergraduate students who have completed at least one year of undergraduate study.

The Commonwealth of Virginia Engineering & Science (COVES) Fellowship
The COVES Fellowship program aims to strengthen ties between the scientific community and state government in the Commonwealth of Virginia, while encouraging and equipping more scientists and engineers to be effective advisors for public policy in the state of Virginia. The Commonwealth of Virginia Engineering and Science (COVES) Fellowship is a 12-week fellowship program of the Virginia Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine (VASEM). Graduate student and postdoctoral fellows will serve as science advisors in a variety of possible placements, including legislative offices, executive agencies, or prominent companies and nonprofits in the state of Virginia. Fellows will gain experience by serving their host office and performing relevant tasks such as researching, drafting, and revising relevant policies. Fellows will also be paired with a VASEM member who will serve as an experienced science policy mentor throughout the fellowship. COVES Fellows must be current postdoctoral fellows or graduate students in a STEM field (including M.S., Ph.D., M.D., M.S.N., other degrees will be considered on a case-by-case basis). Participating institutions and individual host offices may limit the eligibility of the fellows they fund or host.

Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program Collaborative
The Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program Collaborative is a two-year experiential conservation training program for undergraduates who are interested in careers in conservation and in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the field. Scholars take part in applied field research projects, professional internships, mentoring, and form strong professional networks. Scholars learn a variety of field techniques and research and presentation skills. Students are also prepared to help increase diversity, equity, and inclusion in the field of conservation through coursework in communication, creative problem solving, leadership, and diversity, equity, and inclusion. Applicants must be enrolled at University of Florida, University of Arizona, University of Idaho, North Carolina State University, or University of Massachusetts Amherst or must show proof that they have been accepted for admission into one of these five universities. Students must also be in their freshman or sophomore year when they apply. Juniors with at least 3 semesters remaining after the current academic year will also be considered. Students must be U.S. Citizens.

GEOSpace Geoscience Field Program
The GEOSpace Geoscience Field Program’s mission is to create an accessible and inclusive planetary geoscience field course and mentoring program to increase the number of students with disabilities that continue in geosciences beyond undergraduate studies. There are opportunities for all students (or recent grads), whether you identify as disabled or not. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older and an undergraduate student beyond your freshman year, a recent graduate with an interest in applying for graduate school, or an early graduate student. Applicants should have completed at least one geoscience course (geology, geography, natural science, environmental science, etc). Geology majors are not necessary, but science majors are preferred.

Margaret A. Davidson Graduate Fellowship
The Margaret A. Davidson Graduate Fellowship is an exciting two-year fellowship program that will place one graduate student at each of the 29 national estuarine research reserves. Through a research project, fellows address a key reserve management need to help scientists and communities understand coastal challenges that may influence future policy and management strategies. The research reserves represent the apex of estuary science. At these coastal sites, fieldwork, research, and community engagement come together to create the scientific advances that change our communities and our world. Eligible applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of U.S. states or territories admitted to or enrolled in a full-time graduate program at a U.S. accredited college or university, working to obtain a master’s or doctoral degree. Applicants must plan to be enrolled for all of the first year, and the majority of the second year, of funding.

Jose E. Serrano Educational Partnership Program with Minority Serving Institutions (EPP/MSI Undergraduate Scholarship Program)
The scholarship provides funds for two years of undergraduate study to rising junior undergraduate students attending Minority Serving Institutions majoring in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields that directly support NOAA’s mission. Participants conduct research at a NOAA facility during two paid summer internships. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or U.S. nationals currently enrolled as a full-time 2nd year student in a four-year academic program; or transferring from a two-year to a four-year institution; or a 3rd year student in a five-year program, studying a discipline related to NOAA’s programs and mission at an accredited minority serving institution (college or university within the United States or U.S. territories. Must earn and maintain a minimum 3.2 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
